Mike Peca

This fellow has been looking good of late...

Edmonton's journey

I've been taking a little heat about my lack of posting on the OILERS despite their recent victories. Friends, allow me to point out that I've been talking about the OILERS for as long as I have known you.

There comes a time when they speak for themselves- when the lessons they've learned through the years speak for themselves. There comes a time when they are ready to win the Stanley Cup, and no commentary from the fans is required. That time is now.

Last night when the Oil went on their scoring spree it initially appeared Anaheim had collapsed - as they were taking stupid penalties and getting scored on. I commented that they weren't ready to win the Cup- they didn't deserve it. They later battle back, and although I am an Oilers fan, credit is due to them. They showed more character than I thought they had. Edmonton may have panicked, but they held on for the win. They showed more than a little finish, as Craig MacTavish had put it back in round 1. This team is ready to win.

When my brother and I watched them in Edmonton - game 4 against Detroit, although they lost, I knew if they continued to play the way they did, they would win the series. They did.
I am proud of the team. They barely squeezed into the playoffs- but they are playing like they should be there. Let's go OILERS.

Lessons from a hockey team

It is always pleasant to be reminded of one of the reasons I cheer for the Edmonton Oilers. Tonight, in playoff game 4 against San Jose, they got down by 2 goals early on. They scored but again got scored on and were down by 2 goals again. It is now 6-3 Edmonton because they turned it around. When things got tough, they did not quit. Victory will be theirs tonight.

I'm proud of the city of Edmonton (and northern Alberta/ Lloydminster) as well, for keeping the Oilers back in the tough days... For Superstore and the others who worked so hard to sell the minimum number of seasons tickets. For the local ownership consortium. For the community pulling together back in 98 to be the only former WHA team in today's NHL. Edmonton is the little city that could... I hope the OIL keep it up and move onto round 3 for the first time in many years. This year they aren't the favourites, but that doesn't mean they can't play hard and upset many other teams. GO OILERS GO!

West Wing ends

It was a sad day when I heard the West Wing was cancelled. Although I didn't watch it regularly over the years, I can say it was the one TV show that has consistently caught my attention over the years.

The following article put it well:

Farewell, West Wing. I too will miss you.

It Begins...

This post begins my blogging adventure. In less than 2 months I will begin another adventure, as I will depart Regina, my home of almost 10 years, for New Zealand.

Future posts will track my thoughts and observations on a variety of topics - including the things I am learning about life in New Zealand.

But for now, if you're wondering why I chose to leave my home and job to become unemployed and go travelling, read the poem by Robert Frost "The Road Not Taken". It's a good one!

No first post from me would be proper without a mention of the Edmonton OILERS. Tonight we find out who their round 2 opponents will be- Calgary or Anaheim. There is no question that the battle of Alberta would be fun to watch- so I'm cheering for Calgary tonight.
